best young adult books with magic

Books with magical elements are my favourites, and therefore I decided to share the best ones I’ve ever read with you. Hopefully, you’ll get some recommendations out of this post. Cover leads to Goodreads and title leads to Book Depository.

243371. Ella Enchanted

This is a fairytale retelling of Cinderella. It’s a book I believe everyone should read in at least once in their lives, and it’s especially perfect if you want to read a book filled with themes, such as hope, courage, love and friendship. It’s simply wonderful and the magic ubiquitous.

2. Cruel Beauty15839984

Another retelling! Maybe it’s time for me to mention that I adore them? This one is of Beauty and the Beast and Rosamund Hodge is one of my favourite fantasy writers. She likes to add darkness in her retellings and her plots are always original. The magic elements in this novel will surprise you.

3. The Night Circus9361589

If you haven’t read this book already, I pray you to do so. Now. The world-building – aka the circus – is extremely detailed and you really do feel like you’re part of it. It’s not just a book, it’s an experience.

167934. Stardust

You’ve probably heard of this book before, or at least seen the movie. It reads like a fairytale and it’s filled with adventure, romance, magic and even humour. The writing is splendid. Neil Gaiman is an author that shall be read.

ForbiddenWish_BOM.indd5. The Forbidden Wish

Obviously, this is mainly focused on magic – and wishes – since it’s a retelling of Aladdin. It’s one of the best ones there is. It’s such an enchanting read. It’s puts you in a trance and doesn’t let you regain control of you actions until the end of the book.

3313635 6. Mélusine

Mélusine is popular series of comics in French and translated in English that is simply hilarious. It follows the story of a witch – Mélusine – living in a castle with different creatures – Dracula, Frankenstein’s monster, ghosts, etc. – and it’s brimming with magic. It’s everywhere and all the time. My favourite moments are when she’s attending her magic school.

32363077. Graceling

Who could ever forget this book? Not only is the magical world captivating and the romance undoubtedly swoon-worthy, but the plot is also well structured; it’s simply impossible to put this book down.

179267758. Stolen Songbird

Stolen Songbird features one of the rarest creatures we see in fantasy books: trolls. And guess what. Some are gorgeous. It’s a captivating story of bravery, love and fate. Some of the characters will stay with you long after you finish reading it.

Thank you for reading. I hope you enjoyed this post. I’d like to know if you’ve read any of these books or if there are any you’re interested in giving a shot. Do you like magic in your reads?

  3. I agree with Ella Enchanted, Graceling and Cruel Beauty. I’ve actually read those and I’ve heard a lot about the Night Circus but have yet to read it. The Stolen Songbird is now on my TBR list.

  4. Great list of reads.
I enjoyed reading books with magic when I was younger but these days, I am focused on creating my own brand of magic, I suppose. I love the book Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert which talks about how magic influences the creative process.

  5. I started The Night Circus just week before last, and I but it aside, but only because the pacing was a bit slower than what I was in the mood for at the moment. It was so damn beautiful, I can’t wait to dive back in!

  6. I’ve read all of these except for Melusine. And it’s about time I reread The Night Circus again. I love it so much that I own it in hardcover, ebook, and audiobook.
